Mooring

We receive many enquiries about moorings.  There is no doubt that marinas are very busy and it seems that demand is outstripping supply.  Nevertheless all the boats that we put on the water do find a home, so it just requires a little patience.  It will be worth it in the end!

We have assembled a few tips, which we hope are of use:

bulletUse the Waterways World Almanac. Published every year and available from good chandlers, it contains all sorts of useful information, including marinas and BW moorings.
bulletLog on and check out the British Waterways leisure site www.waterscape.com This has a searchable database of moorings listed by waterway.
bulletStudy the classified sections of the magazines.  Some marinas advertise, though they may expect you to buy your boat from them!
bulletBuild up relationships with the marinas.  Call in and make sure you get onto their waiting lists.
bullet"Chicken and egg".  Do you get your boat first and then search for a marina, or perhaps secure a mooring and then but a boat?  There is no hard and fast rule on this one.
bulletBe prepared to settle for a less-than-ideal mooring just to get onto the ladder.
bulletYou will get what you pay for in terms of services etc.
bulletUse the Towpath Telegraph, i.e. talk to people and keep your ear to the ground.
bulletLook out for new developments.  There are plenty out there and often the moorings are sold before the work has even started.

Good luck!
