Running Costs

One of the questions we are asked most frequently is "How much does it cost to run a narrow boat?"

On this page we have assembled some of the common running costs.  Please note that they are intended as a guide and that actual costs may vary between boats, mooring areas and other circumstances.

Fixed Costs

Boat Safety Certificate Every 4 years £150
Insurance Per annum Approx £350 fully comprehensive
Mooring 70p to £1.65/foot/week Typically £3000 per annum for a 58' boat
Registration/Licence Per annum £615 for 56ft (depends on length)
Community Charge (if residential) Typically lower bands  

Running

Diesel approx 40- 46p per litre
  40 gallon tank (=180 litres)
  Engine 1.5 litres per hour max
  120 hours on a full tank
Heating 0.6 litres per hour
Pump out £10 - 15 depending on location

Maintenance

Hull survey approx £220 (any length) + craneage
Full survey approx £450 + craneage
Craneage @ Hanbury £3.75 per foot (per lift)
Blacking £7.75 per foot, every 2 years (includes craneage)
  or 2-part epoxy coat with grit blasting £45 per foot, lasts 10 years
